MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will begin limiting free Gemini usage to its Flash-Lite version from October 9, 2026. This adjustment affects Gemini Apps accessed via personal Google accounts. Users without an AI subscription will lose access to Flash and Pro once the updated rules come into effect. Google states that this change is part of a broader overhaul of model availability across its AI initiatives. The revised access structure was announced in the company’s Gemini Apps support documentation.

Subscribers of Google AI Plus will still be able to use Flash-Lite and Flash, but access to Pro will be removed for them. Google has not announced a single public date for the transition of all AI Plus users. The company mentions that affected customers should expect an email detailing when the new access policies will take effect on their accounts. Meanwhile, AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. The exact timing for Plus accounts will depend on the notification sent by Google.
Google defines Flash-Lite as a lightweight, efficient model optimized for speed and daily tasks such as summarization and brainstorming. Flash provides enhanced capabilities while balancing quick responses with reasoning for both simple and complex requests. Pro remains the most advanced Gemini model from Google, designed for intensive tasks such as complex mathematics and coding. The company also notes that Pro offers a deeper understanding of text, files, images, and videos. Response times for Pro may also be longer compared to other Gemini models.
Paid plans maintain wider Gemini access
Users with access to a Gemini model can select from low, medium, or high effort levels. Google states that increasing effort can enhance task completion and yield more comprehensive answers. However, these settings also consume more of the user’s available usage quota. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will additionally have access to Deep Think, a feature designed for maximum parallel reasoning on complex tasks. This feature is exclusive to the two higher subscription tiers.
The restrictions introduced in October follow earlier modifications to Gemini usage limits implemented on May 17, 2026. Google shifted Gemini Apps to compute-based limits that reset every five hours until a weekly quota is exhausted. Usage calculations take into account prompt complexity, feature utilization, and conversation length. Paid users benefit from higher limits, though premium models and features may deplete these faster. Users under 18 experienced these earlier changes on July 24.
Subscription levels influence Gemini usage restrictions
Currently, Google sets standard usage caps for individuals without a Google AI subscription. AI Plus doubles this limit, while AI Pro quadruples it. AI Ultra offers either five times or 20 times the AI Pro allowance, depending on the plan. Features such as media generation, Deep Research, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think are noted as capable of rapidly consuming usage allowance. The company emphasizes that paid subscribers are granted larger limits than free users.
The October updates specifically target Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts. Separate arrangements remain in place for users on work or school accounts. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel their Google AI plans through Gemini Apps and Google One. Following the update, free personal accounts will only have access to Flash-Lite instead of Flash and Pro. Google also recommends users keep the Gemini mobile app updated as these new access rules are implemented.
